Finders’ Keepers, a universally accessible free thrift shop operated by John Oliver Secondary School in South Vancouver, creates a resource for families to obtain clothing and other resources without feeling marginalized or labelled. It provides families with clothing, promotes environmental sustainability, helps youth develop a healthy body image while building a stronger school and community culture. Our mission is “to bring you stylish, up-cycled and repurposed products you can feel good about, through a sustainable business model that diverts waste, provides work experience/volunteer hours and supports our community in multiple ways.” Clothing is donated to different schools in the district, all of the clothing is collected from the schools and sent to John Oliver where it is washed and sorted by John Oliver Students. Finders’ Keepers holds monthly opene hosues and makes the clothing available to the community. In January we had a 0 Waste Fair! We had upcycling crafts (bag of t-shirts) and games like sock basketball and a Marie Condo folding contest! We also invited elementary schools to sell their upcycled crafts! This was a well attended by the Vancouver District event and focused on the dangers of fast fashion. https://tinyurl.com/rpqmau2 (please watch this link!)
