What does a school do with twenty two empty recycling bins? Use them as garden beds! In previous years, each class at Sir Sandford Fleming have used the recycling bin to transport lunch bags to the cafeteria and back to their classrooms. Now, the classes eat their lunch in their classrooms, and the students are left with 22 empty recycling bins. How should we use these recycling bins? Our school does not have an outdoor garden space, so what way to repurpose these bins than by reusing them as garden beds!

This year, five classes at Fleming Elementary are sharing the recycling bins to grow herbs and vegetables. The big buddies helped the Grade 1s and Kindergarteners to transfer soil into the bins. They planted the daffodil bulbs and the students expressed great excitement seeing their first daffodil leaves emerged.  The children have already been connected more to the natural world as we measure and draw observations of the growing daffodil leaves.

What are the next seeds we will plant next? Stay tuned and visit our garden sometime!
