In science we have been learning about simple machines.  For a final project we thought it would be fun for the students to create a Rube Goldberg Machine that contain simple machines.  The students were up for the challenge and were quite excited about it!  Before the students were able to build their machines we asked them to bring in recycling from home.  Our classrooms again were a warehouse for cardboard, containers, and plastics.  The students had to use the materials they brought in (as well some materials from around the classroom) to build their machines.  Students spent an afternoon creating groups and planning their Rube Goldberg Machines and how they will incorporate at least 2 simple machines into it.  A couple days later was our build day!  The students divided themselves between the different classrooms and began to build.  They spent hours building and improving on their projects and then video taped themselves explaining their machines.  We combined the videos and got to watch all of their amazing  projects.  In the end, students took apart their machines, and separated out the recyclable materials.  The student really enjoyed this project because of the hands on nature of it.  I loved the fact that in order to create their project they did not create waste but instead mainly used materials already slotted for recycling.  Going forward, I would definitely ask students to bring in their recycling again in order to use it to create something for A.D.S.T.
