The purpose of the project, Sunflower Sleuths, was bifold: to hook and engage student interest in the natural world as well as to determine what are the needs of plants. We spent the morning measuring the various sunflowers using both standard and non-standard units. We recorded observations and did observational drawings. Following this we had many discussions: What are the needs of plants?  What occurs when one of the needs is curtailed? What is the symbiotic relationship between insects and plants?  (a couple of creepy crawlies emerged from the root stock during our observations).  We collected most of the seeds and this spring we will test the germination rate. We'll select the strongest specimens and will plant them in our new school garden boxes.
